I am a zebra finch

I am a zebra finch

I received three small
zebra finches
a September day in 1976
from a man

having been on the Atlantic ocean

From the window
I could see the
big parking garage

Wearing homemade
purple corduroy trousers
It was quiet outside
a Friday evening

I put a blanket
on top of the bird cage

It was nighttime

The three small ones
soon becoming two
then one, then
no one

I was
No one

I became a zebra finch

Now I am looking out of
the kitchen window
I see the dress hanging from
the apple tree
I see the past
is playing with the wind
I am a zebra finch
I am dancing now
